In an ever-evolving industry like Consumer Goods Manufacturing, staying ahead of recruitment trends is vital. Martin Bryce, a recruitment expert with over 13 years of experience in FMCG, offers insights into navigating this field. From addressing the latest trends to sharing strategies for success, Martin looks into the world of Consumer Goods manufacturing recruitment in the UK.

With over a decade of experience and a proven track record, Martin Bryce offers a valuable perspective on manufacturing recruitment in the UK. His insights demonstrate the importance of adaptability, communication, and a deep understanding of both client and candidate needs in navigating the challenges of this fast-moving industry. Whether you're a candidate looking for your next role or a company looking to grow, Martin’s expertise ensures a successful recruitment process and he is a valued member of Alexander Steele.

As the head of the Manufacturing Team at Alexander Steele, Martin Bryce says, "My day is spent managing and coaching the team while also handling my own recruitment projects across the UK," he explains. His workday is constantly shifting, with priorities often changing within minutes—a testament to the fast-paced nature of the manufacturing sector.

Martin didn’t plan on working in manufacturing recruitment. After two years in financial services recruitment, the fast-paced and adaptable nature of the manufacturing industry drew him in. “It’s anything but predictable, which I like,” he says.

Challenges

One of the biggest challenges in the UK manufacturing industry today is the rise of counteroffers. With skilled employees in high demand, many companies are offering significant incentives to retain staff. "Good people can be hard to find, so employers are throwing money at employees looking to leave," Martin explains. He emphasises the importance of addressing this early in conversations with candidates, and providing transparent advice throughout the process.

Keeping up with the latest trends in manufacturing recruitment is no easy task, but Martin has a simple strategy—he talks to people. "Despite having over 10 years of experience in Food Manufacturing recruitment, I still rely daily on my candidates and clients for insights," he says. This hands-on approach keeps him attuned to the ever-changing demands of the industry.

When it comes to specific skills, Martin has observed that employers in manufacturing continue to prioritise candidates with the right attitude and drive. "In manufacturing, there will always be a place for people who share a company's values and vision," he explains. While technical expertise is crucial, cultural fit and alignment with a company’s ethos are equally important for long-term success.

Success

For Martin, the most rewarding aspect of his job is seeing his team develop and grow. "I have always loved hitting targets, but the main satisfaction comes from achieving them together," he shares. Whether it’s reaching financial goals or expanding their client base, the collective success of his team is what keeps him motivated.

Martin credits Alexander Steele's reputation and an extensive network of candidates for the success they’ve had in matching talent with the right roles. "We have a strong database of relevant candidates, and we're also highly active on LinkedIn," he notes. His approach to recruitment is very personal, starting with informal chats to better understand a candidate’s professional goals and personality, ensuring both technical and cultural fit.
